How often do you need an MOT test for a minibus?

Minibuses are required to have an MOT after the first 12 months. Different size minibuses also require different types of MOT, so make sure you choose the right one - contact us and we can tell you which you need.

What are the different types of MOT for a minibus?

Class 5 MOT for minibuses seating 13-16 passengers, and up to 5000kg. Class 4 MOT for minuses that have up to 12 seats, 5000kg and people carriers. A minibus that requires a Class 5 test can only be undertaken at designated stations or LGV testing stations - we have one at Adderley Green Garage. A minibus with 12 passengers or less can be tested at a garage that has MOT facilities.

What is the Difference Between a Minibus Service and a Minibus MOT?

An MOT is an annual inspection of your vehicle, and this will determine if it means a strict set of roadworthiness criteria. This criterion is set out by the DVSA. Your minibus might require extra work completed on it in order to pass your MOT. A service will also include the replacement or maintenance of parts, in general, a service is more in-depth and will cover air filters, spark plugs, fuel filters and more. An MOT will make sure that your vehicle is roadworthy, and it just means it's safe to use. A service will get your minibus into the optimum running state and will cover all of the parts of your minibus that the MOT doesn’t. A service is not compulsory, but an MOT is a legal requirement.

Can You Drive Your Minibus Without an MOT?

Once your minibus is over 12 months old, you are legally required to take it for an MOT. Make sure to set a reminder for when it’s due, as your MOT centre isn’t required to let you know. You should also make sure that you book you MOT a week or more ahead of your actual MOT deadline. This will give you enough time to get your minibus the repairs it needs to keep running safely. You cannot legally drive your minibus without a valid MOT. The only exception to driving without a valid MOT is that you are travelling to your pre-booked MOT appointment.

Is My Minibus Insurance Valid Without an MOT?

If you do not have a current valid MOT certificate, your insurance might become invalid, and you run the risk of getting a fine and getting penalty points for driving your minibus without a valid MOT. This means that if you are driving your minibus and have an accident, you will be liable for the full costs as your insurance would be invalid. Make sure that your minibus is serviced and maintained to the highest standard and that it is booked in for its MOT at the right time each year.
