MOT Tests: What’s Included?
A legally required annual inspection of your current vehicle, the Ministry of Transport, (MOT), test is carried out each year to ensure your existing vehicle complies with road safety and environmental standards. MOT tests are carried out on vehicles over three years old at designated and licenced MOT test centres across the country; these can easily be identified by the famous blue sign with three white triangles.
What’s Included In An MOT?
There are several essential checks carried out during an MOT test, to assess the current condition and safety levels of your vehicle, covering everything from brakes and tyres, to your lights, fuel system, seatbelts and everything in between. Below is a list of the key areas and check carried out during an MOT test:
- Lamps, Reflectors & Electrical Equipment
- Steering & Suspension
- Brakes & Brake Fluid
- Windscreen & Wipers
- Windows & Mirrors
- Body Structure
- Exhaust, Fuel & Emissions
An MOT test, however, won’t focus on the vehicle’s engine, clutch or gearbox. This should instead be carried out separately, as part of a vehicle service. At Adderley Green Garage, we carry out MOT’s for all-on road vehicles, up to and including:
- Light Commercial Vehicles
- Motorhomes & Minibuses
How Long Will My MOT Take?
On average, a MOT should only take around an hour to complete, with most successful MOT’s coming in at under forty-five minutes. However, this figure can be subject to change, particularly if there are considerable repairs to be taken into consideration, in the event your vehicle does indeed fail. After all, you won’t be able to drive your vehicle if it does fail its MOT test, at least until all of the issues have been resolved, so it really will depend on the extent of the work required.
Not only this, but a vehicle that does pass its MOT, even if completed in under an hour, is still likely to remain at the garage for most of the day. At Adderley Green Garage, we will likely ask you to drop your vehicle off first thing in the morning, before contacting you when the test is complete, most likely before the end of the afternoon.
How Much Will My MOT Cost?
Set out by The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, the maximum fee test centres can charge for an MOT is currently £54.85 for cars and motorhomes/caravans and £29.65 for motorcycles. It’s worth noting that this is the maximum fee, with test centres often charging less than this if the work required is either non-existent or particularly minimal.
