Whether you own a second car, work from home, or just don’t drive as much as you used to, leaving a car unused for long periods can cause problems if it’s not maintained properly. Even if you’re not putting miles on the clock, cars still need care and attention to stay in good condition.

In this guide, we’ll cover simple ways to keep your rarely driven vehicle in good shape, so it’s ready to go when you need it.

Why Does an Unused Car Need Maintenance?

You might think that not driving your car means there’s less wear and tear – but the opposite can be true. When a vehicle sits still for weeks or months at a time, the battery can go flat, tyres can lose pressure, fluids can degrade, and parts can seize up.

Regular maintenance helps prevent costly issues and ensures your car stays safe and roadworthy.

1. Keep the Battery Charged

Car batteries lose charge over time, especially when they’re not in use. A flat battery is one of the most common problems with cars that are left standing.

Tips:

  • Start the car and let it run for 15 - 20 minutes every week or so.
  • If possible, take it for a short drive to keep the battery charged and the fluids moving.
  • If you won’t use the car for a while, consider disconnecting the battery or using a trickle charger.

2. Check Tyre Pressure Regularly

Tyres naturally lose air over time. When a car sits still for long periods, tyres can also develop flat spots.

Tips:

  • Check and inflate tyres every few weeks, even if you’re not driving.
  • Move the car a short distance occasionally to prevent the same part of the tyre from resting on the ground.
  • If storing long-term, consider jacking the car up or using tyre cradles.

3. Top Up and Check Fluids

Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and screenwash all degrade over time - especially if the car isn’t being used.

Tips:

  • Check fluid levels monthly and top up if needed.
  • Consider changing the oil if the car has been sitting for several months, even if you haven’t hit the mileage.
  • Watch for signs of leaks under the car.

4. Prevent Rust and Corrosion

Moisture can build up inside a car that’s left unused, leading to rust, mould or a musty smell.

Tips:

  • Store the car in a dry garage if possible.
  • Avoid parking on grass or soil, as this can speed up rusting underneath.
  • Clean and wax the car to protect the paintwork.

5. Keep the Fuel Fresh

Fuel can go stale over time, especially petrol. This can cause issues starting the engine or clogging fuel lines.

Tips:

  • If your car will be unused for 2+ months, consider using a fuel stabiliser.
  • Try to keep the tank at least half full to reduce condensation build-up.

6. Protect the Interior

Sunlight and damp can damage a car’s interior, even when it’s not being driven.

Tips:

  • Use a sunshade to prevent fading and cracking on the dashboard.
  • Open windows slightly (if safe and secure) to let air circulate.
  • Clean out rubbish or food wrappers to avoid attracting pests.

Don’t Forget MOTs and Servicing

Even if you’re not driving, your car may still need an MOT to be road legal. The same goes for regular servicing, which helps spot issues early.

Tips:

  • Check when your MOT is due using the GOV.UK MOT checker.
  • Book a service annually, even if mileage is low - fluids and rubber parts can still age with time.
